Ayurveda and Yoga

I have had an ongoing love affair with Yoga since I stepped my feet on a mat over two decades ago. Over the years, as I increased my studies, I came across the ancient Ayurvedic texts and fell in love.

Known as the sister science of Yoga, and approximately 5,000 years old, Ayurveda is a lifestyle guide that can be incorporated into life today.

When one explores the ancient Vedas, Ayurveda is the science of healing and Yoga is the science of spirituality and self-realization.

Two of the most ancient Indian concepts, Yoga and Ayurveda, have a rich history of working hand in hand for generations. Together, they offer wisdom and guidance for our physical, mental and spiritual healing.

I was completely in awe of these teachings. Therefore, when Lisa Bermudez asked me to join her and study with her Ayurvedic teachers Dhyana Masla and Vira Tansey, I said yes with my whole heart and began a journey of self-discovery.

During our Ayurveda training, Vira would always start the morning sessions with movement. It is important to move if we wish to be in balance. Specifically, movement helps our digestive system.

When our gut health (Agni) is out of balance, it can wreak havoc on every aspect of an individual’s day as the stomach connects and influences our moods, joints, skin and many aspects of our internal organs.

Agni (our digestive fire) transforms food into energy, and this impacts all of the essential body processes. Low Agni results in reduced appetite, fatigue, heaviness and lethargy.

Nobody enjoys being bloated, or constipated. Even gas can be painful. I encourage you to explore the many benefits of specific poses that target the core with particular turns and twists as if it were to ‘wring out’ the digestive tract to promote for healthy digestion.

When we move our body, we can activate our body in healing ways – including stimulating our internal organs so they can function healthfully.

Ayurveda has adopted a number of Yoga Asanas that have a variety of medical benefits. The two areas of study are a perfect fit.

Check out this great site from Yoga with Dakota. I love her asana and Ayurveda explanations.
